Peak District Walking Weekend

28th - 30th March 2025

Hathersage, Peak District

Join us for our Peak District Walking Weekend in the beautiful Dark Peak with its imposing gritstone escarpments and wooded valleys, and enjoy a wonderful weekend of adventures, shared experiences and new friendships.

Hathersage is a lovely village set on the slopes of the Derwent Valley, with the jagged crest of Stanage Edge dominating the skyline. First settled in Saxon times, the village developed on the rise of land known as Bank Top where the 12th Century Parish Church now stands. Here you will find the grave of Little John, ‘friend and lieutenant of Robin Hood’. In medieval times, Hathersage stood on the edge of Sherwood Forest; there are several place names locally that bear the outlaw’s name. Hathersage remained a small village until the 18th Century when mills and quarries began to open, attracted by the supply of water power and grindstones hewn from the gritstone edges. The walking around Hathersage is superb, with the gritstone escarpments to the east and deep wooded valleys (known locally as ‘cloughs’) all around.

Mark Reid has written The Inn Way... to the Peak District and so knows the village and surrounding hills and valleys like the back of his hand.

Walking Weekend based from: Scotsman Pack, Hathersage

Weekend Walks

There will be a choice of adventurous or leisurely guided walks on Saturday and Sunday, with Mark Reid and one of his colleagues (who have exceptional local knowledge). The precise routes will be determined just before the weekend, taking into consideration weather conditions etc. You will be able to sign up for your chosen walk at the Friday evening 'icebreaker', where you will also be able to discuss the walks with Mark Reid.

Saturday (9:30am) - choice of adventurous or leisurely walks, with routes through the gritstone dales and moors of the Peak District, known as the ‘Dark Peak’– superb walks full of interest, history, variety and views, not to mention some lovely villages too. Return back to the pub late afternoon to recount your day’s adventures.

Sunday (10am)
- choice of adventurous or leisurely walks taking in more of the Derbyshire Dales and the Dark Peak. Return back to the pub mid afternoon for a final drink before bidding fond farewells… until the next Walking Weekender!

Choice of walks: We usually offer a choice of adventurous or leisurely walks on both days. Saturday is a 'full day' from 9:30am until 5pm, whilst Sunday is a 'half day' from 10am until around 3pm. We will either split into two groups from the start, or we may walk as one group during the morning and then offer 'longer' or 'shorter' routes after lunch.
