Howgill Fells Walking Weekend

11th - 13th April 2025

Sedbergh, Howgill Fells

Join us for our Howgill Fells Walking Weekend in the beautiful rolling hills of the Howgill Fells in the western Yorkshire Dales, and enjoy a wonderful weekend of adventures, shared experiences and new friendships.

Sedbergh is a lovely small town nestled at the foot of the magnificent Howgill Fells, a range of open rolling hills and deep valleys that offer some of England’s finest walking. With a history stretching back over a thousand years, here you will find the remains of a motte and bailey castle as well as the beautiful 12th Century St Andrew’s Church, where George Fox also preached in its churchyard. The narrow Main Street is lined with old shops and cottages; indeed, Sedbergh is known as England’s Book Town as its many bookshops testify. The walking around Sedbergh is  excellent, with the rounded summits of the Howgill Fells easily accessible, such as The Calf, Calders, Arant Haw and Winder, all of which are linked by sweeping broad grassy ridges and saddles. There are also wooded valleys, old railway viaducts, geological fault lines, lovely villages and cosy pubs to explore too.

Mark Reid is the author of The Inn Way… to Yorkshire Dales, and has walked the Howgill Fells exensively and so knows the surrounding countryside and hills extremely well.

Walking Weekend based from: Dalesman Inn, Sedbergh

Walks

There will be a choice of adventurous or leisurely guided walks on Saturday and Sunday, with Mark Reid and one of his colleagues (who have exceptional local knowledge). The precise routes will be determined just before the event, taking into consideration weather conditions etc. You will be able to sign up for your chosen walk at the Friday evening 'icebreaker', where you will also be able to discuss the walks with Mark Reid.

Saturday (9:30am) - choice of adventurous or leisurely walks, with routes across the dales, hills and fells of the Howgill Fells - superb and varied routes with amazing landscapes. Return back to the pub late afternoon to recount your day’s adventures.

Sunday (10am)
- choice of adventurous or leisurely walks, with routes across the surrounding dales, moors and hills. Return back to the pub mid afternoon for a final drink before bidding fond farewells... until the next Walking Weekender!

Choice of walks: We usually offer a choice of adventurous or leisurely walks on both days. Saturday is a 'full day' from 9:30am until 5pm, whilst Sunday is a 'half day' from 10am until around 3pm. We will either split into two groups from the start, or we may walk as one group during the morning and then offer 'longer' or 'shorter' routes after lunch.
